| The May 2005 Avon
Ski Market Super Bike Commuter is Jerry Ledger, an employee
of Alstom Power of Windsor.
Jerry has been biking to work since 1973, when he began
relying on his bike for travel to work in Jackson, Michigan.
Currently he commutes 10 miles each way from his home in
Granby, 4 to 5 days a week, from April through October.
He keeps in shape in the winter by going to the YMCA, and
he finds that bike commuting actually saves him one hour per
day.
Alstom makes it easy for him to be a bike commuter - they
have bike racks, large locker rooms and showers available.
Jerry encourages and promotes biking to work wherever he
goes, he even co-produced a video on biking to work last year.
Jerry advises would be commuters, "Commuting by bike
is a great way to start and end the work day.
I enjoy my ride, and don't go fast.
You can do it too." |

Denise Clavette, a St. Paul
Travelers employee, has been selected as June 2005's Avon Ski
Market Super Bike Commuter.
Denise Clavette lives in Manchester and bikes the eight miles
to her job in downtown Hartford three to four times a week. She
first tried biking to work in 1999 but didn't get serious until
2000, when a coworker joined in. They worked together to find
the safest route and gave each other encouragement. Each year
she has biked a bit more and extended her riding season, so that
now she bikes more than half of the year.
She considers herself to be an average biker, not a super
athlete, and encourages others to give it a try: "You will
arrive at work feeling refreshed and energized, and on the way
home, biking is a great stress reducer. And try to find a bike
buddy to keep you motivated." Denise also appreciates that
her employer, St. Paul Travelers, helps to make biking to work
feasible, by providing convenient shower and locker facilities.

| The July 2005 Avon
Ski Market Super Commuter is Keith Chambers who bikes to
work to stay fit. Keith
lives in Avon and works for The Hartford in downtown Hartford.
He bikes year round, usually biking four days a week,
though he stops biking when the temperature dips below 15
degrees or when it is too wet.
His commute route is 13 miles, but on the way home he
likes to increase his ride to 25 to 40 miles, taking side trips
to Tariffville, Granby or even Barkhamsted.
His employer makes it easy for Keith to commute by bike,
providing bike racks in the parking garage, so his bike
stays safe and dry. Keith
advises new bike commuters to be prepared, "buy a helmet
mirror and use it, carry a small first aid kit, pump your tires
every day, and manage vehicles - ride like a car.
And have fun while keeping yourself in shape!"
Keith will be awarded a bike jersey, courtesy of Avon
Ski Market, at 7:00 AM at the downtown Bike to Work event.

| The August
2005 Avon Ski Market Super Bike Commuter is Richard
Raport of West Hartford.
Rich first tried biking to work three years ago and has
now become so addicted to the pleasures of bicycling that he
bikes to work 5 days a week, in all weather, rain and snow, only
stopping when the temperature approaches zero.
Rich got started after a medical scare not very different
from Lance Armstrong's.
Rich now commutes 10 miles a day, using a
longer route that avoids the heaviest traffic and also uses his
bike for most errands, including grocery shopping.
He encourages others to give it a try, "Try biking
to work, stick with it for a couple of months and you will never
go back to the 'I'm-stuck-in-traffic-rat-race.'
You will enjoy the fresh air and get a great work out at
the same time. My
bike commute takes five minutes longer than driving and biking
is even quicker than driving if traffic is heavy.
My commute keeps me healthy and happy and I don't have to
worry about gas prices!"

| The September 2005 Avon
Ski Market Super Commuter is David Westcott of Tariffville.
David's commute is 13 miles into downtown Hartford, but
typically he rides a 17 mile route and some days he turns his
commute into a 25 mile trip, depending upon how he feels and how
much sunlight is available.
For many years he was an infrequent bike commuter, then the Bike
to Work promotion introduced him to a frequent bike commuter
who inspired him to extend his bike commuting season and
distances. He now bikes to work 3 days a week from April through
September. David explains his enthusiasm for biking to work:
"I use bike commuting as the base for aerobic fitness,
which allows me to do other activities on the weekends, like
backpacking, with much less pain. Another benefit I've been
noticing is that I have increased energy to do projects around
the home that I used to put off." |
